Hops...straight or in a bag?

When brewing a hoppy beer, or I guess any beer, do you put the hops right into the wort or do you use a nylon bag?

Straight in and whirlpool them out at the end.

I go straight in for pellets, and hop bag for whole leaf.

I prefer whole leaf, so I bag them for easy extraction.

However if I can only get pellets, they go straight in and get a whirlpool at the end to get the most goodness out of the boil kettle.
