I want to find a recipe that is easy to do and wouldn't suffer from having the hops changed every time. I'm a hop-head but I have zero knowledge of how to distinguish the varieties by taste or aroma- they all just taste like hops. So a SMASH - type recipe that could be used for a wide range of hops varieties is what I'm looking for. Has anyone done this before? Is this a good way to figure out what the qualities each hop variety has to offer besides just reading about them?

yes, single hop beers will let you tell hop flavors easily.

have you tried looking at the hop bill for some of your favorite commercial beers? Especially ones with a "signature" hop, ex- Pliny tastes a lot like simcoe, Sierra nevada has a distinct cascade taste, Sam Adams tastes like Hallertau...etc.
