The recipe I'm following calls for 1 oz. Fuggles 4.5% at 60 and 1 oz. E. Kent Goldings 5% at 15 for an IBU of 23.5.
The Fuggles that I'm buying are only 4.2%, and the EKG are only 4.5%. If I follow the original schedule with my hops the IBU is 21.6. If I push my EKG addition back to 20 minutes my IBU is 23.3.
Should I follow the original hop schedule and settle for the 21.6 IBU, or go with the revised schedule that gets the IBU up to 23.3? Is the difference between 23.3 and 21.6 even noticable? Would the increase in flavor from the 20 minute addition change the "character" of a nut brown ale so as to deviate too far from the style? Am I just being anal?
