I just finished my first imperial IPA. I was expecting a strong hoppy smell like Dogfishhead but apparently not. I'm guessing I used the wrong hops for that, but instead im getting some serious grapefruit. Is the reason my choice of hops?
Attached is my recipe (I kitchen sinked my spare hops).

15.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 96.77 %
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (30.0 SRM) Grain 3.23 %
0.60 oz Styrian Goldings [5.40 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
1.50 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (Dry Hop 14 days) Hops -
0.25 oz Saaz [4.00 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
0.75 oz Glacier [5.60 %] (Dry Hop 14 days) Hops -
1.00 oz Saaz [4.00 %] (90 min) Hops 12.3 IBU
0.50 oz Williamette [5.50 %] (Dry Hop 14 days) Hops -
0.50 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (75 min) Hops 19.4 IBU
0.50 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (60 min) Hops 18.6 IBU
0.50 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (45 min) Hops 17.1 IBU
0.50 oz Nugget [13.00 %] (30 min) Hops 14.3 IBU
0.50 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] (20 min) Hops 7.4 IBU
0.50 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] (15 min) Hops 6.0 IBU
0.50 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] (10 min) Hops 4.4 IBU
0.50 oz Northern Brewer [8.50 %] (5 min) Hops 2.4 IBU
1.50 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
2 Pkgs Nottingham (Danstar #-) Yeast-Ale

Ahem. Or maybe the 1.5 oz Cascade dry hop. duh.
Next time try using the american styles primarily for bittering and use the more earthy hops for aroma, finishing and dry hopping.

That's a lot of Northern Brewer in the finish! They are definitely not a favorite of mine, but I get more minty/metallic from it then grapefruit. Either way, not an ideal hop for a IIPA. Cascade on the other hand will give you some serious grapefruit

I used cascade hops on my first batch and never noticed the grapefruit flavor until someone pointed it out to me last night...

that is the craziest hop bill i've ever seen! glad to see people experimenting with all these different hops together. we'd love to see a picture of the beer if you have one.

definitely the cascade. I'm drinking liquid grapefruit right now in my all cascade hoppy amber.

edit: liquid grapefruit = grapefruit juice? talk amongst yourselves

Im giving serious consideration to dumping a pound of cascade in my next IPA, now that should turn out nice and grapefuity. There's a micro a few hours away that makes an IPA that i love, and its very grapefruity.
