Im fixing to do up another APA with Marris Otter, Vienna, and a little crystal 40. I wanted to try a centennial/willamette combo this time with a nice mild 40 IBUs but with an explosive hop flavor. This is what I've come up with so far, please feel free to comment on why it will or won't work, and how I can make it better. Thanks for any info.

1.25oz centennial 6%AA, 60 min. 26.4 IBU
1.00oz centennial 6%AA, 10 min. 7.6 IBU
1.00oz willamette 4.8%AA, 10min. 6.1 IBU
1.25oz centennial dryhop 10 days
1.25oz willamette dryhop 10 days

I'm still new to this recipe formulation thing so any critique would be helpful, thanks.

I would have a 30 minute, 5 minute and flameout addition along with what you have. Might make you cut your 60 minute down a bit to get your IBU but what you calculate and what is actual will vary. I shoot for 70-75 calculated IBUs for my hoppy pale ales and bet if tested it would be closer to 45-50.

Thanks for the info, should I rob the 30min,5min, and flameout hops away from my 10 min, and dry hop additions? Or are you talking about adding more hops to the existing recipe?

Maybe something like this would be better?

1.00 oz Centennial [6.00 %] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -
1.00 oz Williamette [4.80 %] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -
1.00 oz Centennial [6.00 %] (60 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
0.50 oz Centennial [6.00 %] (25 min) Hops 7.3 IBU
0.50 oz Williamette [4.80 %] (25 min) Hops 5.9 IBU
1.00 oz Williamette [4.80 %] (5 min) Hops 3.4 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial [6.00 %] (5 min) Hops 4.2 IBU

How critical is the 30 minute addition when your moving from 60 minute bittering hops to late addition flavor hops? What is the mid range addition bringing to the table that your not already getting from the main bittering and the main flavor additions?

You get a blend of bittering and flavor with that 30 minute addition. I just stole the schedule from Yooper's Pale Ale and adjust per hops.

Assuming a 5 gallon batch that looks pretty good. I add ~2 ounces at Flame Out after I have fired up my Chiller so they get added at about 195 ish or so.

I am a hop head and have found that with late additions I don't even need to dry hop anymore. If I do, I just drop a bag of hops into the keg.
