I'm lucky enough that SWMBO owns at an antique and vintage shop, and occasionally brings home some pretty cool stuff. Her latest find, that she's sent me a picture of, is this glass barrel that looks to me like a wide-mouthed carboy.

Unfortunately, there's no lid to go with it. Does anyone know where I can find or how I could make a lid that would fit it?

(The store is Matter of Time in Toronto, if you're curious :D)

How far off is it from a Northern Brewer Big Mouth Bubbler? Not sure they'll sell you just the lid or that it would even fit, but that's what it looks like.

If I wanted to seal that and couldn't find a lid, I would get a piece of rubber sheeting (preferably silicone) and something heavy and flat to sit on it, with an airlock hole in the middle somewhere.

What is the outside diameter of the jar?

Which part of the jar? The opening itself is 5 inches. The guy at my friendly local homebrew store suggested I check a winemaking supply shop, but got inturrupted before he could really explain why.

And Lburkholder, I'm pretty sure it's not a Bubbler; it's hard to tell from the picture, but in person it looks like it was once painted on the exterior to look like stained glass.

It's a pickle jar, of the kind that sat on store counters, so you could ask for one of those giant dill pickles as you paid for your wares.

I gave a couple away to some Kombucha makers.........The lids don't fare well, or long, sitting on a jar of Vinegar, for most of them are not coated, (painted), inside, and the acetic acid finishes them off.

It's definitely a pickle jar as someone else mentioned. I have a different 2.5 gallon jar that would have originally held pickles and plan to use it for small batches or partial sour mashes. The original lid would've been thin metal similar to modern canning jar caps, but roughly 5 inches across. Inside of the lid would have been a wax coated disk of cardboard that would likely smell terribly of vinegar and you wouldn't want to use it. I threw away the cardboard on mine but kept the lid. Some day I'll find a silicone ring to put on it or just use the starsan'd aluminum foil/rubber band trick. You can find similar old pickle jars in 2.5, 4, and 5 gallon sizes. Maybe other sizes too. Generally you'd pay more for them as antiques than a brand new carboy.

Thanks for all the input :) I'll probably end up using the saran wrap/foil combination, and stick a hole through for the airlock. Not sure how I'll manage a blow-off tube, but I'll think of something.

The Saran Wrap / foil is the airlock. It will leak enough to vent the co2....rdwhahb
