Hello to all.
Well, after wanting to do this for years, I finally got around to brewing my first batch of beer. I received a 1-gallon kit from NB as a gift, and brewed up the Irish Red Ale recipe a couple of days ago. It took me a few months to get around to using the kit
, so perhaps the crushed grains were a bit stale, but whatever...at least I have a little experience now.
A couple of things I will remember for next time:
1) Start with a bit more water than what the instructions said (5 quarts). I ended up with only 2/3 to 3/4 of a gallon of wort after the boil.
2) Be more careful with the water temperature when steeping the grains. I steeped for the prescribed 10 minutes while the water was heating, but when I removed the grain bag the water was already about 180 degrees.
Anyway, nice to be here and I'm excited that I've gotten started with this hobby! Even if this first batch doesn't knock my socks off, it's great to have gone through the process the first time and learned a few things.
