The CHAOS homebrew club (in Chicago) is holding a Maibock (Helles Bock) competition for members. To help prepare for that competition, we did a guided tasting of the style, via zoom, and recorded it. Jump to the 10:30 minute mark for the program to begin.
We are fortunate to have a nearby brewery that makes an exceptional Helles Bock - the 2017 GABF Gold Medal winning Lo Boy from On Tour Brewing. Because in some ways the Helles Bock sits between the Helles and the Dunkels Bock, stylistically, we also tasted the Dovetail Helles and Old Irving's Lifesblood.
I organized the tasting and other leaders were Patty McGuire Cook (organizer of the competition), Jeff Whelpley (Certified Cicerone and BJCP Judge) and Kyle Nordquist (National BJCP Judge). We were joined by Dave Campbell, brewer at On Tour, who shared brew notes on Lo Boy with us and visited with us about a variety of brewing topics.
