The hefeweizen I brewed on Wednesday has had a very active fermentation, in fact it filled the airlock twice on thursday. After the second time I attached a 3' blow off tube. I should have done this from the start, as I had a hefe earlier this summer with a very volatile fermentation.
 
my hefe was the same way. blew up 3 times one night! what yeast did you use? i had used the WL Hefe V. super banana-clove flavor....it was a good brew. next time i'll lower the temp a bit to maybe keep that from happening again.......
 
White Labs American Hefeweizen. Transferred to secondary today, looks good. I'll bottle in a week. I'll let you know how it tastes.
 
I made a Hefe with the White Labs and it came out great!!! I think you will be very happy.
 
The majority of the hefes I have brewed required a blow off tube, I ve used two different Wyeast and one White labs hefe yeast. There is just something about hefes (or at least my hefes) that they have violent fermentations.
 
blow-off tudes are the way to go IMO....... don't ever have to worry about exploding beer due to a clogged air-lock....
 
I have had this problem in the past as well. If you can afford it, a 6.5 gallon carboy will solve this problem. Or, as stated, a blow off tube on a 5 gallon also works.

Wheat beers always have very volatile fermentation.
