When I do a boil with my heatsticks, they end up with "gunk" on them. This is a greyish-white coating. It is easy to clean off with a green scrub pad. The gunk has no taste, it is not sweet at all. I have noticed no scorched or carmelized tastes, even in light beers.

Has anybody else seen this?

I've never seen this, but I wonder if the protein is sticking to the heat sticks once it separates in the boil?

i have seen this in mine before as well. i just dont worry about it. i know they are not scorching. just clean them when you are finished boiling. no problem.

Scrape it off and spread it on toast.

Or you can just do an Oxy & clear water soak & boil to clean things up.

But, you will be missing out big time on a real taste sensation.

I have noticed it as well with my heat stick. I think it looks like protein from the hot break. Not concerned with it though as it cleans off easily.
