I am looking at doing a couple of lagers recipes from the Brewing Classic Styles book (Munich Dunkel, Vienna Lager) which call for Hallertauer hops. The site I am purchasing from has 2 types of Hallertau hops and I wanted to see which ones would be best and if there would be any major difference between the 2 as the Mittlefruh's are half the price. I will post some links below.

Hallertau is a hop growing region in germany. Mittelfruh is one of several cultivars of "Hallertau". For instance there are also Hallertau Magnum and Hallertau Tradition. Just to call a hop "Hallertau" is just half of the name. Like calling a Volvo a Volvo, what kind of Volvo? Is it the SUV or the compact one?

Thanks for the replies so far, I really appreciate it!

I ended up getting mostly the German Hallertau as they only had one left of the mittelfrueh. Reading the above it sounds like the mittelfrueh would have been the best out of the 2.

Here is some info on what the hop supplier says about the 2, let me know if you think I will run into any issues or if I should try and source elsewhere.

They are both excellent. If they cost the same, Mittelfruh is the premium noble hop. But if "regular" Hallertau were cheaper then I'd just get that.

My LHBS truncates the name with some of the hops they sell. I see "Hallertau" and "Kent Goldings" without any reference to what version. The store buys in bulk and repackages in vacuum-packed pouches.

My local store does the same thing. They're the only HBS for hundreds of miles around, so I'm going to use what they have in the cooler. They do have a large hop substitution chart on the door of the hops cooler. Makes it easy to make a choice if the store doesn't have the exact variety you were looking for.

I like to use the low alpha aroma hops as "first wort" hops.
Using two or three ounces of mild hops is attractive because my tolerance for sharp bitterness is low and the prices are good with the right hop combinations. My choices are typically Hallertau, Saaz, Styrian Celeia/Golding and Willamette. I rarely use anything over 10AAU for bittering and avoid IBU's above 40 like the plague.
