I was a bit disappointed by last year's collab with Kehrwieder, but I'm REALLY loving the Sierra Nevada/Gutmann oktoberfest this year. Wondering if anyone has insight into what makes this one tick if someone was to attempt to come close to replicating it for the future.

6% ABV, 30 IBU
This one seems to have a more pronounced, floral/noble hop characteristic than a typical festbier, and a bit deeper color/malt complexity.
Other sources/claims:
  • Malt:
“The wheat malt gives us really nice sweetness in the aroma, followed by a little bit of lemon characteristic from the Saphir hops and a nice dry, crisp finish on it.”
In addition to the previously mentioned wheat malt, the brew teams also used Munich, Pilsner, and Two-Row Pale Malt.
    (additonal source)
  • Hops (same source as above): Hersbrucker, Loral, Saphir, and Spalter Hops

I found similarly, it was really solid but also not the typical Festbier in Germany (founders currently has one that is spot on). I didn't get the cracker-like malt. However, that's not what you're asking :)

Anyhoo, what about the following (and I don't see a reason to use 2-row, I think that's a cost thing)

50-60% Pilsner
10-20% Red/White Wheat
10-20% Munich Light
5-10% Munich Dark

As for the hops, I think mostly used between 20m-5m mark, with whichever has the highest AA for bittering.
