There is probably a reason I that this didn't show up when I searched for it because it is probably hare-brained, but I figured I'd throw it out there:

Anyone think it would be feasible to grow a hop plant upside-down a-la Topsy Turvy Turning Gardening Up (as seen on TV:cross:) Maybe out a second story window?

That looks like it would REALLY restrict root growth. I haven't grown hops yet but I'm planning on starting this year and I'm really limited on space. I had considered something like this but in all the reading I've done, the root crown needs room to grow and spread.

Plus, hops climb for the sun. Anything, including other hops. They grow sidearms that grab stuff so the main bine can keep climbing.
