I hate these things because I never know where to start or what to share, so I will start with the basic profile info. I am 38, male living in VA (Bealeton) with my wife. We moved away from the city a 3 years ago and have been embracing the simple life of the country trying to make things ourselves and grow a lot of our own food. We have decided to keep bees next year and this naturally led into me looking at making my own mead. Of course this led to researching making my own fruit wine since we have so many wild berries on our property; which naturally led to looking at making beer. Before this evolution my wife often asked if I was interested in making my own beer and I just dismissed it with a shrug and "not really". The more I read the more interested I became, then I learned one of my buddies was getting into home brewing. Unfortunately just after finishing his first batch he was diagnosed with celiac and I think gave up on the idea of brewing. Since I was in research mode I began researching brewing gluten free beer and have been encouraging him to give it a go (he has not found any bottle GF beers he likes).

Anyway, I kept toying with the idea that maybe I should just give it a go (brewing and evetnually brewing GF), but kept putting it off. Then one day my wife and I are in the local Good Will looking for som ethrifty finds (seriously I am amazed what you can find in there on the cheap) and my wife just grabs my hand and pulls me over to a shelf, points and says, "is that a complete kit". I look at the box she is pointing to and it appears to be a complete "Brewers Best" Homebrewing kit (the kind with the two plastic buckets). I take the box up front ask if I can look through it to see if anything is missing and they agree. I begin looking and realized the kit was "brand New" in that it had never been used. Istill had the inspection tags in it everything was wrapped etc. As a bonus it had an ingredient kit inside. I looked at the ingredients and realized it was out of date (the yeast was all that was dated) and looked unusable. As a result I got them to reduce the price and got the whole kit for $15, thus my excuses to not brew were over.

So that is who I am why I am looking at brewing and how I got into it. I am very new to this and I know I will have lots of questions and I expect to make lots of mistakes. just be gentle with me when correcting me.

Welcome to the Forum. Have you made any yet or still researching?

you should read john palmers book how to brew. there is a free version you can read online. i highly suggest you read it.

I'm sure you can still brew that kit, find a big pot and give it a whirl. The John Palmer book is great, as is 'The Complete Joy of Homebrewing' by Charlie P.

The best of luck and welcome to the hobby. Find a local brewing club and find some like minded folks, if you are patient - cruise criag's list for additional equipment (pots, etc.).

You sound a lot like my girlfriend and myself. I also started with fruit wine, and the addiction grew from there. We're actually located a little over half an hour south of you in Rhoadesville. I'm part of a really good homebrew club in Fredericksburg if that's something you're interested in. Welcome aboard!

Cheers mate. Sounds a lot how I started. Equipment sitting at Goodwill. Only my kit was older (although still unopened) and was still on the donation pile outside, and they let me take it free.

I did try to brew the kit and abandoned it after adding the DME. I went out and bought a new kit (brewers best American Light) from our local cheese shop and brewed it up. My brew is fermenting a way (1 week in) as I type this.

Before anyone asks why I abandoned the first batch it was two fold. First when I opened the can of LME it expelled air, not a good sign from any canned good, but I proceeded anyway. When I added the DME, as I said it had solidified, it sank straight to the bottom and proceeded to burn. I decided too many things potentially going wrong using ingredients of unknown age and storage history. I needed to return some items to the cheese shop anyway so I used the store credit to buy a new kit.

Excellent story! Welcome aboard from CT!

Went to college in Roanoke, VA and visited NOVA multiple times over my four years!

Congrats on the first brew!

Cheers!

Welcome to the hobby, and the group, from CO :mug:

Being able to farm fruits, vegetables, hops, barley- that is my dream when I retire. I'll eat most of it, but a good portion will end up somehow fermented!
