I just signed up here. I am not even a home brewer yet. But I thought I would lurk around and learn some.

Happy brewing

Welcome.

I'm sure you might have read/heard this before but here it is again:

Buy a homebrewing book or read the free online version of How to Brew
www.howtobrew.com

Also check out the homebrewing wiki on this site.

Definately take a few days to learn the basics, but don't let that stop you from picking up a starter kit and an extract recipe (even a pre-made one) and giving your first brew a shot.

There is alot to deal with regarding sanitation, etc... but most beers are very forgiving and it is possible to brew a great first brew with limited experience.

Good Luck

Thanks! Yea I have read the wiki and most of the intro stuff on this site. I have also looked over several other sites and watched some brewing youtube videos.

I know a number of home brewers. My brother in law is into it. He had a great beer at their daughters birthday party. I also know a few guys in my church who homebrew. We often have their beer at our poker nights. Yea I know, I go to a church with people who homebrew and play poker with (where we drink the homebrew). Pretty cool overall.

My main issue is political. My lovely wife, while not being against the whole homebrewing thing, would probably be less than happy if I went out and bought all of the stuff to start homebrewing.

BUT

If I got a starter kit as a gift I would be golden. Still working on the gift thing...

If you can support it financially here is the secret:

Get your wife into a fairly expensive hobby like collecting baskets, scrapbooking, etc... Something she can't get enough of. Then when she starts buying stuff you remind her of how much she spends and how you need money for your hobby as well.

Have we convinced you to start brewing yet???

Oh I have been convinced. Like I said though, I just have to work around the initial supplies purchase. But I think I have that covered :D

Plus I think we have a 5gal glass water jug (like on a water cooler). I guess that is pretty much like a glass carboy.
