the last couple times I have brewed I have been exceeding my preboil gravity by about 8 points or so, per beersmith calculations but when I take my OG reading i am either under or I actually just hit it on the nose I am finishing with about the right volume does anyone know why this may be any suggestions

You have to also look at volume.

Your preboil volume might have been "too high" or "too low" vs what was expected. volume of water does affect preboil gravity all other things being equal.

pre and post boils where pretty close i would say at least within a quart
