Hello.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with ginger ale and ginger beer?

I brewed a wort with around 1.050 grav saf ale us 05
used northern brewer superstructure lme and steeped some rahr 2row barley. Added about two or three large ginger rhizomes from local market sliced.

heres my concern: I sipped a bit yesterday and began to feel different like psychotropicly influenced, like trippy. This scared me because I did not expect it. Is ginger beer psychoactive?

Dannabis: No, I'm pretty sure that Ginger is not a psychotrophic substance.
Two years ago, back in the crazy experimental phase we all seem to go through, my 2nd batch ever was a 'Honey Ginger Wheat'. An extract wheat base with 2 lb of honey and 8 oz. ginger root. Primed with a little too much maple syrup. I still have a few left because while it wasn't much of a beer, it sure makes a fine stomach tonic!
Someday I'll revisit ginger beer, and hopefully do it right. :mug:

several websites confirm ginger intoxication and call it ginger jitters.

I've also found another post by a homebrewtalker that had a similar experience: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f128/ginger-beer-more-intoxicating-380758/

I've had tons of beers in my life, including high alcohol ones and this is not like that. The effect is almost instant.

Apparently Kaempferia galanga ginger is probably psychoactive.

Common ginger is zingiber officinale.

@JimRausch
What size batch of honey ginger wheat did you brew?

I put probably a pound in a gallon batch.

@christier I think ayahuasca has more ingredients and i'm not sure I could make it in a fermenter.

I've read that it is almost hard to make dangerous brew when using basic good brewing techniques, but I am wary of this brew so far...

Interesting reads, although I'm still skepticle(sp?) about common Ginger having any psychoactive effects. My batch was a 5 G extract batch with 2 lb honey, juice of 2 lemons and 1/2 lb ginger. I used a grater on the ginger, so it was quite fine(what a pain grating that much Ginger was). It was added in the last 10 minutes of boil. My notes are at home, but I think it was somewhere in the mid 6%'s on ABV. Pretty much No One liked it because the ginger was so strong. It does settle the stomach though........
