I have this unquenchable urge to brew a fruit lager. I envision the clean smoothness of lager yeast to be a nice canvass to allow the fruit to shine through. Im high on the idea of using apple in particular. I think one would need a pale base, a touch of wheat for some head retention characteristics, and a bit of dextrine malt to lend a hint of sweetness. Here is what Im thinking:

Applager

1.050 OG
1.012 FG
4.8 SRM
20 IBU
4.9% ABV

78% Golden Promise
15% White Wheat
7% Cara Foam

.750 oz Sterling 60 Mins
.750 oz Liberty 15 Mins

White Labs WLP810 San Francisco Lager Yeast

5 Lbs pureed Granny Smith Apples in secondary
1 oz Apple Extract at bottling

Has anybody ever done anything similar?

I'm thinking of doing similar but with strawberries

Sounds damn good. Strawberry is volatile like apple so we are in the same boat. I feel a lager would be a more appropriate backdrop for these fruits. Let's brew them and see how they turn out!
