My roommate and I had a ton of first time experiences when brewing on Sunday:

1. First time brewing a lager
2. First time making our own recipe
3. First time using beer smith (see 2)
4. First time making a starter
5. First time using decoction mashing

We nailed all our gravities, and have about 5.5-6 gallons of our 1.07 OG Traditional Bock fermenting away merrily. Aiming for an ABV of 7.0-7.1. Hopefully it works out! Decoction is very counter intuitive, I always thought boiling the mash would stall conversion, but we hit our gravity perfectly!

Exiciting day of firsts!

Sounds like a good day. For me, a day filled with firsts usually results in some hiccups. I tend to make things too complicated for myself when I do that. However, it is fun.

Beersmith is a great tool that can help make your brew day easier, but make sure you go through the tutorials on their site and set everything up to fit all of your equipment. The closer you get those profiles to match your typical brew day the better the match Beersmith can give you on what to expect from your beer.
