I made my first starter yesterday with Trappist High Gravity. I couldn't find a large erlenmeyer flask for under $30 so I used an old 4 liter glass cookie jar. After sanitizing it well I put the starter in. Having read about the need to agitate and/or stir I did so a few times before bed last night.
When I got up this morning I figured I should agitate again....wrong! Don't do that unless you want wort all over your counter. I can only imagine if I had used an erlenmeyer flask...since it has a narrow top it would have acted like a high pressure nozzle and coated the ceiling.

How big is your starter? A 4qt jar should be plenty big enough without incurring blowover.
For larger starters I use a sanitized 1 U.S. gallon glass apple cider bottle. The opening for the cider bottle nicely takes a #6 size stopper so you can use an airlock bung.
