I brewed a Golden ESB a few weeks back. It’s in the secondary now and is still fairly cloudy. I’m going to give it some extra time there and cold crash it when I keg it, but I’m still not confident it will clear. I was thinking of using some finings while it’s still in the secondary, but I’ve never used any before. What does everyone use? How do you use it? What have your experiences been? Does it affect flavor, etc.?

Thanks for your help!

First of all I stopped using a secondary step a decade or more ago. Beer will generally clear given time. Especially if you are kegging. The first pint poured may be cloudy but the rest will be fine. Yes, it can affect flavor but again, if you accept that the first pint goes down the drain the rest will be fine.

As already stated, I would avoid the secondary unless you can purge vessels and perform close transfers.

You can certainly fine in the secondary but you need the beer to be cold and it needs to be mixed in harmoniously. Which can be difficult to do properly if you can’t close transfer.

Your best option is to add biofine or gelatin to a purged keg and transfer cold beer into it, to let it get mixed up well. Then let the beer fine in the keg
