So I talked to the Obama Office in Salt Lake City on friday and found out that they send people to colorado to talk up obama to help him win in Colorado since no democrat ever wins in the presidential election in utah ever. I am trying to see if they will help pay for my GABF trip if i talk about obama all day and then go to the GABF at night :tank:

then as i was talking with friends later we said obama and beer in denver would be an awesome weekend...and we decided we needed to brew an election day beer. it would be young... but we could force carb it in a keg.

We dubbed this brew "The Audacity of Hops" because of Obama's book the Audacity of Hope. :D

so we made up a hopped up double IPA.

we used 6lb of American lite extract and 3 lb of M&F lite extract which is a little darker. I also used some liquid California ale yeast.

we then decided to do 1oz of Chinook hops for the bittering stage and 1 oz of chinook for the aroma... i will then gauge how hoppy it is when i put it into secondary and dry hop my first time ever with Chinook again depending on how i feel for the proper amount.

I have never used the same hop 3 times for one brew so i guess we will see how it goes under recommendation from the HB store guy.

should be done fermenting about a week before elections and then we will force carb it for a week. dunno if it will be done fermenting in time though since its a fairly hefty beer. my fingers are crossed though...otherwise we might have to wait until after elections to drink it.

:rockin::mug:

EDIT: wasn't thinking straight when i posted the recipe... it was actually 3 packages at 3 lbs each of liquid extract and not 3 lbs total. it is now fixed.

What size batch is this?

If you're force carbing, then I imagine it will be good before election day. Ferment for three weeks, then a few days in the keg, and it will be done before the end of October.

This is way better then the "Clinton Cola" fundraiser that Bill had back in '92

So 3lbs of liquid extract total, I hope I am missing something?

If not, then you would have OG 1.019, and you might get around 1-2% ABV. You will also have a 2.732 BU:GU ratio. In short, this beer will be completely un-drinkable if that is the entire recipe.

But at least it will be ready in plenty of time. :)

Yeah.. I'm pretty confused as well. 3 lbs?

oops... i was thinking 3 packages of liquid extract not 3 pounds... each one was 3 lbs... so 9 lbs total of extract.

OG reading was 1.071... so after ferment i would think i am looking at ~7% ABV

Cool, I was missing something. I still say it will be ready in time though.

eeeeeeeeeekkkk.... my apartment building shut opff the AC in the whole building on monday.... my brew hit 80 degrees on the fermometer on the bucket all day long before i could get home from work. grrrrrr... now its in the bathroom with a bath towel wrapped around it soaked in cold water. i hope it didn't make it have weird flavors from fermenting at 80-81 degrees all day long.

u should attack ur building manager for that terrible move

It's been a few days, so most likely nothing bad is going to happen. Most of the fermentation is probably already done, so the warmer temps may have just actually helped the yeast do a last minute cleanup. Who knows, only time will tell, but I bet it turns out just fine.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait... wait... wait... wait.

There's Democrats in Utah? I thought the church outlawed those years ago! :D

Chinook is a good hop to use for bittering and aroma. Be prepared for it to be aggressive though. A good example is Arrogant Bastard by stone, it's an all Chinook IPA. A month will be pushing it, but it will be drinkable then. And a day at 80 degrees won't kill it, you'll be fine.

Darn those sneaky republicans. Quick, do what Obama would do: ABORT! :D

(Not trying to be political or anything, hope your beer turns out fine, regardless of party-affiliation)

im not really a democrat... i just really dislike McCain and Palin enough to support the Dems this year. normally im my own party and vote all over the board. but im from wisconsin and now living in utah so i find that most of my votes swing democratic around here since the mormons run the republicans in this state. and the alcohol laws for that matter... so much for separation of church and state eh? that mormon republican control of alcohol is what finally pushed me into homebrewing because i was having withdrawals from all the good beer back in wisconsin. :mug:

i wish... i was afraid of this happening after we had a cold weekend. sure enough they turn it off the day it gets warm again. it fermented for around 48 hours pretty heavily at about 18hrs into primary... so im hoping like someone else posted that it did alot of what it was gonna do already before it got hot.

now it hasn't been cold for a week and we will have no ac until next spring... even with the wet towel it was still getting up to the high 70's in my bathroom on the fermometer. i used california ale yeast which said on the tube that it liked to be around 70-75 degrees. so im hoping that high 70's isn't to far off for it.

obama wants to raise taxes......? As if brewing supplies isn't high enough!!!! new moto - F@#* Obama 08 !!!! he can KISS MY ASS !!!!! -peace

Really? That was pretty un-peaceful if you ask me, and completely off topic to this thread. It's called the debate forum, use it for your trash talk and leave the beer threads alone.

In his defense this thread started out political.

:mug:

Should have brewed a "Socialist Stout". Would have been much more appropriate!

I'll second that. Not to wish your brew ill, but it it turns out undrinkable it would have alot in common with the candidate.
