ebay aquarium temp control problem

I hooked the temp controller up to my kegerator and dropped the probe into a bottle of water and set the perameters...It seemed to be working fine and turning the compressor on at 3 degrees celcius and off at 2.... I am going to use it as a ferm chamber for the next couple of weeks so I turned the temp up to 16 degrees. It has been a few hours and the freezer has not turned on but the temp still says 3.5 degrees. I opened it up and the bottle of water is frozen solid with the probe in it. any ideas as to why it froze the water even with it set above freezing nd how do I fix it?

one thing i that ice has a tendency to expand, so since the probe was contained, seems to me that it got crushed/damaged

can't tell you why it happened in the first place, could be many reasons
