A couple buddies and I are taking a road trip from Baton Rouge to Vermont drinking great local beer and we are looking for some input as to the breweries/ brewpubs to hit up/ avoid.

We are leaving June 23 and Will be going to NOLA, Pensacola, then ATL, Greenville, SC, Asheville, DC, Philly, and Middlebury, VT and everywhere in between. The return trip will take us by Niagara Falls and Cincinasty then Birmaingham before we return to the Red Stick. We have to be back by July 3rd and we chose these citys because they have been suggested or we have free places to crash but are somewhat flexible.

We are looking to get great local beer and drink with the best of em. Any input is more than welcome.

Thanks,
William

Pisgah in black mtn, nc right outside of Asheville. I have found most of Asheville's breweries to be mediocre but Pisgah is pretty darn good and their tripel (Endless Summer, I think they call it?)is one of the best American "Belgians" I've ever had.

Speaking of belgians, if you're a fan, the basement of the Thirsty Monk in downtown A-ville is not to be missed and always good American craft brews on tap upstairs. Barley's Taproom has lots of local A-ville & SE beers on tap and pretty good pizza iirc. I enjoyed the barbecue place next door, too.

Sweetwater seems like an obvious one either in or near Atlanta (can't remember exactly where they are) and I would stop at Dogfish Head in DE. You may be looking for more locally/less nationally distributed stuff though. I highly recommend Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, VA. A mere 8 miles from my home, I try to get out there at least once a week.

If you are going from Niagara to Cincinnati then swing through Cleveland and check out Great Lakes and Market Garden. They are right next to each other. Then on your way out of town down 71 hit up Fat Heads.

Just my 2 cents.

Edit: There are also some nice local brew pubs in Columbus, but if you have limited time stick with the Cleveland options starting with Great Lakes.

When you get to VT, you will need to head to Waterbury to a brewery called the Alchemist. They are brewing out of the cannery now, their pub/brewery was destroyed by the flood last year and are still in the process of rebuilding things.

But if you go to the cannery now you can find cans/tastings of Heady Topper, their flagship IIPA. It's worth the whole trip by itself IMO.

www.alchemistbrewery.com should be the website, check them out very cool operation.

I know you're not hitting Maine but once you get to the NE watch for brews from Maine Beer Company. They may only be available in the bottle. The Zoe & Peeper are excellent, I haven't had the others but I suspect they are great as well.

Theres a bunch between Philly and Middlebury, VT.

off the top of my head.

Defiant Brewery - (Saddle river, NJ i think, on the way)
Peekskill Brewery - Peekskill, NY (a little more out of your way)
Captain Lawrence - Pleasantville, NY (i think, a little more out of your way)
Newburgh Brewing Company - newburgh, NY (on the way, exit of I87)
... there is also two bars i know of in Newburgh that have a wide variety of localish craft beer on tap, Wherehouse and Golden Rail (where supertroopers was filmed)
Keegan Ales - Kingston, NY (on the way, exit of I87)
Theres a few in Albany NY area as well. Browns comes to mind.

Must go by Terrapin in Athens. Outside Atlanta. Laid back get togethers every evening on the weekend with live music. I think it's $10 but you get a tour, pint glass and 10 tickets for 10 beers to try. Ok to bring your dog and throw a frisbee.

Eat first as they pour them full. :drunk:

I assume you will start out on I10 Abita brewery is on the way Kiln MS is a short detour and you could see Lazy Magnolia brewery.

In Atlanta Check out Sweetwater brewery and Red Brick brewery. If you are looking for a pub there you cant go wrong with The porter or the Brick Store Pub. Five seasons brewing company has good food and good beer as well.

In Bham Good people brewing and Avondale brewing have tap rooms that are good to hit up, and there is a great beer bar called the J Clyde.

I'd make certain to hit Troegs in Central PA (Hershey) as well as Ommegang and Ithaca in NY state! (We loved Otter Creek/Wolavers in Middlebury VT), Magic Hat isn't far from there.

Also, when leaving Niagara Falls and heading South, we found an awesome little brewpub in Ellicottville NY (Ellicottville Brewing) its a sleepy little mountain town known for its skiing. We had a quick lunch and a few brews on our way back to PA...had a ball.

def go to the alchemist and buy a case of heady topper. that might not even be enough. Next, lawsons finest liquids. if you can get to portland maine, hit up rising tide, allagash, and maine brewing. theyre in the same industrial park.

If you're going to be heading up I-91 through Mass you need to stop in Northampton and check out the Northampton Brewery. Awesome beers, great food and a really nice outdoor deck to enjoy them on. A little ways up 91 in Greenfield Mass is the Peoples Pint, another great place to enjoy some quality beer. Another plus is that both places are less than 10 minutes off of the highway

You obviously didn't see the T shirt! 'Ellicottville, a drinking town with a skiing problem!"

EBC has great beer and the food is also good. Stop in the Blue Monk on Elmwood in Buffalo for some Community Beer Works beers (Frank or the Whale) http://www.communitybeerworks.com/ and a long list of Euro imports. Heading towards downtown the Pearl Street Brewery is also good (head up to the second floor and go out the back to the "porch". http://pearlstreetgrill.com/brewhome Head down to Ellicottville http://www.ellicottvillebrewing.com/ and over to Southern Tier in Lakewood http://www.stbcbeer.com/stbc/ . Have a good trip!!

:) i wore my tshirt last night in this thread's honor!

Coming up through Maryland/Delaware/Philadelphia area...see how far Dogfish Head is out of your way (nice little brewery call Evolution is near them as well), Victory in Downingtown, PA is pretty good, Yards/Nodding Head and Triumph in Philadelphia come to mind.

Hardywood Park - Richmond, VA
DC Brau Brewing Co. - Washington, DC
Dogfish Head - Rehoboth Beach, DE
Victory Brewing - Downingtown, PA

Asheville - Pisgah, Greenman (<- not far from Thirsty Monk)
Birmingham - Good People Brewing is easily the best beer in town (tap room in the brewery), downtown not far from I20

Dogfish for sure. If you do a stopover in DC there is Bier Baron and RFD (Regional food and drink), not actual breweries but probably the two best beer selections in the city. There is also Capital City brewing, which makes their own, but I was not that impressed with their offerings.

Athens is a good 1.5 hours east of Atlanta, though. Might be too much out of the way if they're just going through Atl.

I'll be in Athens next summer for a wedding, though, so I'm glad you shared this. I'll definitely have to check it out.

Hardly.

Meridian Pint, Smoke & Barrel, Churchkey and *maybe* Big Hunt if they ever clean their lines.
Also Rustico in Ballston & Alexandria and Fireworks in Clarendon.

There's plenty more than just CBW on tap at Blue Monk, and you should definitely stop in for dinner. But hey, while you're there you may as well try us, right?

Let me know when you'll be in town. That timeframe is pretty boring, brewing-wise, but we might be able to show you around the brewery.

In Waterbury VT where the Alchemist used to be, there is the Prohibition Pig. It is a pub and they serve Heady Topper on tap. Definetly hit the cannery and pick some up, but bring a cooler, it is cold when you get it, so if you want to bring some home, keep buying ice.
Trout River in Lyndonville isn't too bad either. They are seldom open, I would suggest calling for hours.
Rock Art is in Morrisville, close to Waterbury and makes some crazy beers too. Vermonster!

We are leaving June 23 and Will be going to ... Greenville...

If you want to get some good bottles to take back, I highly recommend that you hit up the Greenville Beer Exchange downtown. It's right next to Barley's Taproom which is a pretty good bar itself. Blue Ridge Brewery is a pretty decent brewpub as well, and just down Main Street from the previous two.

I highly recommend Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, VA.

I second this. And while you're here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, check out the rest of the "Brew Ridge Trail." Down the road (RT151) from Blue Mountain Brewery is Wild Wolf (a newcomer, I've liked what I've been tasting) and Devil's Backbone (just built a bigger distribution brewery, so you may start to see more of them. Their Vienna Lager is an awesome session beer). From there, you can head back into Crozet to check out Star Hill (owned by the manager for the Dave Matthews Band. Commercial, and the beers can be hit or miss, IMHO, but worth checking out for the ones that hit).

All of these are just a hop skip and a jump off of I-81. If you feel like going further into Charlottesville, check out Beer Run. They're a retailer/restaurant who sell a great variety of beers, and always have fun and interesting beers on tap.

If you would rather continue up 81 (or head back over here from Charlottesville), check out Jack Brown's and Billy Jack's in Harrisonburg: JBs is a burger joint with amazing beers, and BJs is a wing shack with amazing beers (both owned by the same people).

Sweetwater is the obvious choice and can be an enjoyable experience but if you can make it to Athens to check out Terrapin then you should definitely do so.

Terrapin in itself would be a great time, but the brewery is just minutes from downtown Athens with many great restaurants and even more bars to enjoy.

Of course, me and my wife went to UGA, so we have a special place for Athens in our hearts.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions. We did end up making the trip and are currently on day 4. If anyone is interested in keeping up with our journey, you can follow us on twitter @GoinEast4Yeast.

Our first stop was Lazy Magnolia in Mississippi. Leslie, one of the owners, gave a great tour. Unfortunately due to state laws they cant serve any beer on premise. New laws go into effect July 1st allowing them to open a taproom and begin brewing beer over 5%. We missed it by a week.

Our next stop was Pensacola Bay Brewery. The brewmaster had the day off so they had cancelled the tours, but when they found out we were from Baton Rouge they called him in to show is around. He seemed excited for an excuse to drink and talk about beer. They had an awesome IPA and we ended up leaving with a gallon growler full.

The tropical depression in the gulf ruined our day at the beach, so we headed to Atlanta a day early. Our first stop was 5 Seasons Brewing on the westside. Every beer i tried was excellent, but i definitely recommend the oatmeal porter. The manager took us down to the brewhouse to show us around. It was a very impressive setup.

The next morning we stopped by Red Hare Brewing just outside of atlanta. They were in the process of setting up their mew canning system, but took the time to show us around and let us sample some beer. They had an awesome saison on tap as their "Rabbit Reserve."

Our next stop was back to Atlanta for Sweetwater Brewing company. It took us a while to get past "The Gatekeeper" but she eventually found someone with enough free time to show is around. He ended up being the head brewmaster and gave us the full tour. Their expansion is incredible. They were in the middle of installing 8 new 1000 barrel tanks and a new 350 barrel brewhouse. Their new bottling line is massive as well. They said they were bottling about 430 barrels a day. The brewmaster then grabbed two bombers that he had been cellaring for over a year and took us to the tasting room. The guys there were awesome. We ended up hanging out in the tasting room for a while with a few brewers and someone from quality control. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip so far.

We decided to make the detour to Terrapin in Athens even though we couldnt confirm that we would be able to see the brewery. We got turned away at the front desk, but were flagged down as we were pulling out of the parking lot. The guy told us he was offended that we were leaving without seeing the brewery. He turned out to be one of the owners and gave us a private tour and tasting. Another impressive brewery putting out great beer. We ended up picking up a few six packs on the way out of athens.

We spent last night in greenville and hit up Dark Corners Distillery this morning. They had some pretty interesting moonshine they were putting out. We then walked two doors down to Blue Ridge Brewpub. The brewmaster was cool and we talked to him for a while. I wasn't all that impressed by the beer, but to be fair it was before noon and i was still hungover. We grabbed some bottles from the Greenville Bottle Exchange and headed to Thomas Creek.

Thomas Creek was extremely busy and didnt have much time to show us everything. It was cool to hear about all the different contract brews they've been putting out. We sampled a few if their beers and headed to Asheville.

We only had about 4 hours in Asheville, but we made the most of it. We hit up Pisgah, Wedge brewing, and Greenman. The brewing scene in Asheville is amazing. I didnt have a single beer that I didnt like.

We're on the road to D.C. now. Hopefully we'll be there by 3 am. Sorry for the long post, but i wanted a record of my trip for when i get back. We have D.C. Brau and Chocolate City on the schedule for tomorrow. We're winging the whole trip so a lot of it changes on the fly. We're still open to any recomendations

Thanks

Awesome! You seem to be well on your way into an excellent trip, with no lack of good advice. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Heading into central pa at all? Hit Baltimore on the way!
Troegs
Duclaw
Heavy seas
Flying dog
Pizza boy brewing
Spring house

Defiant Brewery - (Saddle river, NJ i think, on the way)

Unless they opened another location, Defiant Brewery is in Pearl River, NY right next to the train station. They also smoke ribs and some other goodies on the weekend that are first come first serve - that may have changed though.

Was just up at Alchemist picking up some Heady Topper and was talking to them about all the people interested in this beer. I said there was a group that came up from LA. She says, the Tin Cup guys? Yeah, they had two vehicles, one for people one for beer! Seems you gents at least made an impression.

This thread is amazing...illustrates just how far craft beer has come in a very short time. Just a decade ago or more the list offered the OP would have been almost infinitely shorter!

Time to pitch the locals: next time you head up this way, take a stop in Charlotte...two great new breweries, Noda and Birdsong!
