I have the Blichmann conical fermenter (Fermenator), which I love. Should I remove the fermenter from my temperature controlled chest freezer after dry hopping and before cold crashing and dump the trub through the sump valve? I haven't been doing this, but now I'm wondering if maybe I should to get a clearer beer when I rack to my keg. Or is this unnecessary because the trub sits below the rack arm so not that much will get into the keg?

I add gelatin to my keg and end up with pretty clear beer, but maybe I should be dumping the trub, too, before I cold crash to get it even clearer.

After my boil, I pump everything from the kettle to my conical and let it settle while I clean up the brewery. I then use the dump valve to dump the trub prior to pitching yeast. Before I dry hop, I dump yeast out (many times to save for a future batch) to give the hops as much exposure to the beer as possible. I will also dump the dry hops prior to using gelatin (I do it in the fermenter before cold crashing and kegging). I doubt that you're hurting anything by not doing it, I just do it because it's easy and I feel it helps the quality/appearance of my beers.

Great idea, I'll use that next time. I also just had the revelation to use the waste water from my CFC to clean the mash basket and such. Worked great, it's great to see the efficiencies improve with each batch! Thank you.

Thanks. I'll definitely dump the trub at least before cold crashing. I had been adding gelatin to the keg. Perhaps I should add it to the fermenter before my 3-4 day cold crash. Cheers.
