Drilling Holes in Mash Tun lid for Sparge

In looking over my igloo 5 Gal cooler that I use for mashing it appears the lid is completely hollow. I was thinking I could drill a hole in top and thread a barb hose fitting in it and drill a series of small holes in the bottom for sparging. Has anyone tried this?
 
I think you are better off just drilling through the whole lid using a bulkhead fitting and have the return off of that.
