I have a friend who is giving me some CO2 that has sat around for what he thinks is about 8 years. Is there any concern that it could go "bad" or give kegged beer an off flavor due to its age?

I was in the same situation. I chose to use it. Unfortunately (or not) the mfl QD was not quite tight enough and it all leaked out over night. Had to hit the local compressed air supply to test the tank and refill.
My vote is use it 8f you know and trust your source.

Did you taste it?
In all seriousness, I doubt it.
But your canister may have to be recertified

I'll check the cert. I certainly trust the source (he was using it for homebrewing, just hasn't used it in a long time). I can't imagine if it is sealed that it's an issue- I would think CO2 is inert and wouldn't react with anything..

Co2 does not go bad, that would require free oxygen and there is none in co2
