Of course the kernels of grain need to be milled, or you'll get 0 (zero) extraction from them.

Flaked goods (e.g., flaked oats) don't need to be milled, but you'll get somewhat faster conversion in the mash when you do. Small bits are faster hydrated than large chunky ones.
