disconnecting freezer

I have a refrigerator that has one of those metal compartment type freezers. There doesn't appear to be any kind of seperate temp control and it ices up real fast. Is there an easy way to disconnect without messing up anything too important. Kind of vague question I suppose, but when I was looking at it I couldnt see if there was just a wire I could disconnect or if I would have to just defrost it every couple of weeks.

The way I understand it, the freezer is what supplies the main part of the fridge with it's cold. Can't have the fridge without the freezer.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think that is correct. At least, that is how mine works. I would think that you are going to be defrosting periodically.

Teh Jonston controler thingy that keeps chest freezers at the temp you want. You can take out the shelf so there is no isolated compartments and the controler will shut things off before they freeze. I think the instructions even say if you use it with fridge/freezer combos the freezer will no longer work (as long as the controler is hooked up)

This is a classic Catch 22: frost-free units have seperate evaporators & controls for the fridge & freezer, manual units only have one. Living in Oregon, I defrost about twice a year, or whenever I need some ingredient that is ice-bound.
