I figure a "Hey" is in order. I've been reading these forums for a while now, (made it through the entire Mr. Beer thread and most of the Apfelwein thread) but haven't posted since the search function is a valuable tool indeed.

I've got a few Mr. Beer brews under my belt (gotta start somewhere) and I'm looking forward to steeping/partial boils and playing with hops before moving to all grain.

My first post was in the extract thread and I'd love to get some feedback on a brew I'm planning on doing soon.

Cheers all!

Yes it seems like you would be hard pressed to find a question that has not already been answered on this forum.

welcome from a former PA yankee that spent a ton of time (every weekend may-nov) down the shore in OCNJ.

Not to mentioned answered 10 different ways, all contradicting each other...

Oh, and welcome from Sayreville!

Hmm, true. The fun part is working out which advice is correct, although sometimes it's all wrong and the best way to get answers is to just try it for yourself. Bend the rules, think out-side the box and enjoy the hobby. At worst you'll dump 20 litres of undrinkable muck that cost you all of.. $20 bucks? Take one for the team, be inventive, and please post the results - even if you f/stuff it up. Remember there is always someone who knows less than you. Posting your experiences (good or bad) will be of benefit to someone.

Well said. I've brewed a few extracts by now and a failed Apfelwein alteration, but I always find someone who digs the result, even if I don't.

Cheer's to biting off more than one can chew!

I just joined this forum as well. Funny your from Kearny since I lived there for 9 years. Right on the border of harrison and kearny by west hudson park. I move to Garfield Dec of 09.

I'd pickup a True Brew kit such as Pale Ale as it comes with hops and crushed grains as well as extract which is a good step if the plan is to learn how to make all grain beers as well. I have not moved to that yet, but enjoy being able to manipulate the beer further even though there is a concentrated wart that you don't have much control over.

Oh cool. Small world. Have you tried brewing with the tap water? I've been using 3 Gal bottles of Primo spring water from the Kmart with some Mr. Beer kits I've been playing around with. I'd be curious if you had decent results from out tap water though.

I filtered my Hefeweizen (that I should be bottling this weekend) through a brita. But it was tap water. The Irish Stout I started almost a week ago I used bottled water because I just happen to be in walmart getting some other crap and saw 1 gallon jugs of drinking water for 79 cents. It took me a while to filter 5 gallons of water through the brita so 79 cents a gallon saves allot of time. I do remember when I did my Mr. Beer kit when I lived in Kearny I used the tap water, and I didn't like the final result of the beer. I'm not sure how much it was the water as opposed to the Mr. Beer kit in general.

That's pretty much what I've been doing. I'm planning on picking up a 5 gal bottle of Primo water to brew with for my next brew (Midas Touch clone) and then use the jug as a secondary. It's all worth the bit of extra cash as far as I'm concerned; at least until I get more into water regulation.

My first Mr. Beer kit was drinkable at best. I followed the directions for comparison's sake more than anything (one can LME, + booster). I used spring water on that one, so I'm sure the fact that you used tap water had little to do with your own end results.
