I use a chest freezer as my fermenter with an STC-1000 and some heat wraps.
I usually set it and forget it for a week or so. Recently the temp got down to freezing (chest freezer is outdoors) and the chest freezer stopped cooling. I waiting until a day in the 50's (have run in many times in 50 degree weather) and tried it, but no luck.
Is there a way to save it? Any components I could test? It still turns on and tries to work, but it just won't get cold.

What do you mean by "it still turns on and tries to work"? Do you hear the compressor trying to start with a clicking sound? Does the compressor actually start?

Finally got around to messing with it. Compressor does turn on. No clicking like it is cycling on and off. Just a steady hum. Ran it for about 4 hours today and the compressor got very warm (not too hot to touch though). The temp inside went down 4 degrees in as many hours. never heard it clicking on and off. Just ran the entire time. Outside temp was 50 F at start and 42 F at finish of the 4 hours.

This happened to my refrigerator once and I called for service. They filled the thing up with freon and it worked again. Not sure if that's your problem.
