New guy here.. about to do my 2nd brew ever. I've been reading an old thread here about some guys doing a clone of Ithaca Brewing Company's Flower Power IPA. The grain bill is as follows:

94% 2row
3% Honey Malt
3% Acid Malt

I was planning on subbing the 2 row for the DME listed below but was wondering if I could steep the honey malt and the acid malt to get the desired effect.

As I said.. I'm brand new at this, so please feel free to unload any feedback, criticism and ideas y'all have.

From what I've been reading, acid malt needs to be mashed, but the addition of acid malt is usually done to lower the ph level of the mash. It won't do you any good for an extract brew.

Thanks for your help on this.. I've been reading some conflicting information on this.. some people are saying that it is responsible for a bit of flavor.. adding sort of a "guinness style byte".. but I have no hard facts to go on.

Regarding the Honey Malt.. any problem steeping that? I've been reading some conflicting reports on this too..

Thanks for your help!

I think you can steep honey malt since it is almost like a crystal malt. While it is true that acid malt is mostly just used for ph purposes it does lend a very subtle nutty flavor. If you have a little victory malt that might accomplish this.

thanks all.. I think i'll scratch the acid malt altogether just for simplicity's sake for the first go around. I'll give it a try and report back!

Hey I'm curious how this came out? Also brewing my 2nd batch and looking for something similar to FP. Would likely do a partial mash.

I modified it a bit..

I've made this recipe a bunch of times and it's a good IPA, however I can't say it's very close to the Flower Power. The hop profile is a little different, and it always comes out darker. I just brewed a batch with 1272 yeast and upped it to 1lb of honey malt so I'll update this thread with what I find.

I'm only 5 batches into brewing and only one partial mash under my belt so this recipe was really just an educated guess based off what I've read other people doing. I'm hopefully going to do an all grain batch soon and it will likely be a version of this recipe.

The above recipe will give you a nice IPA. Not overpowering and I've gotten some good feedback from people who aren't into the "bigger" beers.
