I tried searching for this, but most corona mill threads talk only about the mill, with mention of efficiency, but don't talk about the actual crush.

So, I finally got to use my corona mill for the first time this weekend, and after a few test grinds, adjusted the crush to where it closely resembled what I get from the brew store. The only difference is that, with my mill, the spectrum of uncrushed grain to completely pulverized grain was much wider. Naturally, the HBS has a much more consistent crush. If I had to guess, around 10 or 15 percent of the grain from my mill was completely untouched, and I could also see husks that were ground finely, neither of which appear in the HBS grain.

My efficiency came in at only 64%, but I had no trouble lautering or sparging. I'm sure I can increase the crush and get some more efficiency out of it, but I'm not really sure what to expect.

With the corona mill, should I expect to have a small amount of uncrushed grain, or is it possible to crush it all of the grain while avoiding stuck sparges? If anyone has pictures of their corona-milled grain, that might be helpful.

Do you have the washers for spacing and have you installed a bolt to replace the cotter pin in the grind plate to prevent wobbling?

If you've done those things and the plate isn't wobbling then you shouldn't have any whole grains. You'll need to tighten it up.

If your plate is still wobbling then you can expect whole grains and inconsistent crush.

Well it looks like I suck at searching. That's very helpful. I do have the washers and bolt, and the plate isn't wobbling, so I shouldn't have any problems there. I guess my concern is that I'm using a false bottom instead of a braid, so I'm not sure how much crush the FB can take. With how easy the lauter was, I'm confident I can still crush more, but just wanted to see what others were doing.

Thanks!
