Hi everyone, forgive me for asking, but I am a complete novice at homebrewing. But I am attempting to have ago at the coopers british bitter. It says to add dry malt extract. My question is will brewing sugar work just as well?

You can add the brewers sugar instead of DME. The brewers sugar will give you a lighter and drier beer because the sugar is 100% fermentable.
DME is often added, either a 50% proportion or in lieu of the sugar, to add flavor and body.
