I want to mount a dial thermometer into my Rubbermaid 10g cooler through a bulkhead fitting. Can anyone tell me if the 3" stem type thermometers are long enough to reach through the wall far enough into the mash to get an accurate reading?

I know that there is a dial thermometer with a 6" stem, but I fancied getting one of the Blichman bremometer type with the mash markings on it – and it only comes with a 3" stem.

Thanks
Ian

It would read whatever temp is at that point. If you stir and get the mash equalized it should be accurate.

The trick is getting within the mash area without it being so long you smack it with a spoon every time you stir.
