Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but this is a question I have about using my brand new conical (well, it's working its second batch currently):

How often should I be draining the trub and how much should I expect each time?

Obviously, the whole point of having the conical (apart from the 14-gal batch capacity it gives me) is to keep the beer from picking up flavors from the trub without having to go to a secondary. But I also don't want to lose any more than necessary.

Anyway, any words of advice or experience from those that know would be appreciated.

A friend of mine has been using a conical for years and only dumps once when fermentation activity slows.

I'm using my conical for the first time as well, and I plan on dumping the trub and harvesting some yeast at the end of the first week.
