First time home fermenter here. As such I have a couple silly questions.

Firstly, is there a search feature am missing on the mobile version of the forum? I'm sure I'll have more silly questions through this process, haha.

Secondly, is it safe to drink a cider straight after primary fermentation? Being my first experiment I have 4 one gallon fermenters on the go. They are exactly but the same currently but I was thinking of drinking them at different stages or states.

As in, I was thinking of syphoning one in to a jug to put in the fridge right after the airlock has been idle for a day or so. One I was going to move to secondary for a week or so and the other two I was going to let sit in secondary for a bit and then bottle, one with priming sugar and one without so I could have one carbonated and the other not so much.

Does that seem reasonable? Does it all seem safe?

Thanks!

To answer your questions:

  1. I would suggest using the mobile app, since that has a search feature built into it. I'm not seeing a search feature on the mobile web site.
  2. You can absolutely drink the cider right out of primary. It won't be carbonated, but it's totally fine. If it's not done fermenting, it'll have more yeast in the cider than after than yeast settles out. But, it's not a bad thing to taste-test along the way to learn about your brew.
Just keep in mind, lack of airlock activity does NOT indicate fermentation is done. I'd let things sit for a week after the airlock settles down before bottling. (Or, better yet, use your hydrometer to see if it's at final gravity before bottling.) No one like exploding bottles.

The search function on HBT is very lame unless you're a paid supporter. Google searches will bring you here and they're much more effective.

You can drink your cider at any stage you want. If fermentation is still under way you'll get some yeastiness. But if it's done and you refrigerate it the yeast will settle out and yup you can drink it. Lots of people do that.
