The beer Keg angel has arrived.

Some of them still have beer in. How do I know? 'cause I got a beer shower when I tried to remove a dip tube!

8 of them.

Nice! Yeah- the one that I picked up yesterday still had some in it. Not worrying about it now, since I am not attacking it until the weekend.

It's illegal to own uk brewry kegs and they do prosecute all the time if anyone is found with them.

Is that intact kegs? I assume it's okay if the tops have been cut off, making them effectively "destroyed"

Then that that would be criminal damage as well as theft.

The breweries do actually sell direct to a smelter and send some to an industry reconditioner. That way they don't find their way onto the market so they know any out there are not legit.

I was suprised by this and only found out when I tried to purchase legally and spoke to Kegwaych.

Because they are from a brewery that has closed down and they can''t be repatriateD. I've bought them from Keg watch and have reciept.

There's a few for you if you want them. They cost me £8.50 inc delivery and vat. (beer free)

Founded in 1837 at the Market Street Brewery, they moved to their final location in 1875. It became one of the largest regional breweries in the country taking over a number of breweries. By 1998 the group operated this brewery and Wards in Sheffield. Soon after a new Chief Executive was appointed in 1998, they announced plans to closed both breweries and sell national branded beers in their pubs. Following a massive local uproar and a failed attempt to buy the breweries, they closed in July 1999. To complete the story, soon afterwards the pubs were sold to Pubmaster.

May be a dumb question, but why is the UK Government so concerned about reusing beer kegs? I know in the US there are places concerned about Milk Crates but barely ever enforced.

It's not the government it the breweries. They say it costs them millions each year. So they subscribe to the industry watch dog, Kegwatch who recover and ship kegs around the country. They are the ones who prosecute and offer rewards. I didn't know any of this until I tried to buy kegs.

I could only find stolen ones for sale. The few scrap dealers I tried told me it was illegal to own them. That's when I got in touch with Keg watch. They couldn't sell me any of the breweries kegs but told me they a had 8 "ownerless" ones and that's out of an estimated 6 million kegs in the UK!!

I forget the US city where this occurred but they went to using aluminum storm drain and sewer covers. Turns out that was a big mistake as theives were soon stealing them. And it wasn't so nice dropping and auto's wheel into the open hole. Went back to the heavy cast iron ones.

The scrap value of a keg is £7.50, keg watch offer £50 if a stolen keg is retrieved from infromation given. The courts impose a £1500 fine plus costs on those prosecuted. That's why the scrap dealers won't touch them any more.

Sure, that would be great! We'll have to sort something out. I have some family in Burnley, Lancashire that are due a visit. Not far from Warrington I guess (well, closer than Southampton anyhow ;) )

If you're going to Burnley, then you'll pass within 2 miles of my home. Jct 21 m6.
Let me know if you want me to keep you a couple and when you may be passing. Rather than paying for them how about you swap me something usefull or interesting?

If it works out, why not call round on a brew day?

How long are you prepared to keep them for?

Wife! Mine says No!
Blighty Just let me know when your thinking of coming up.

I'll show you how to get the rest of the AG set up for peanuts.
I can't see why you can't go AG for less than £100.

I just worked out my AG batches are costing me around £8 a batch around 20p a pint. :) Less than half the cost of an Extract brew.

Oh crap! My wife has just seen these posts! I'm in trouble now! :(

£8 a batch, wow, that's cheap!

Well, I'm gonna be around Northamptonshire over Christmas. Then I could come up to see the rest of the family in Lancashire after Christmas. But I wouldn't want to interrupt your holidays. Other than that, it'd have to be a weekend sometime in the new year?

If I'm on here I'm in the country, if not I'm jetting of somewhere elese for £5.

No rush I can keep them for a bit. See if you can brake the chains for a day whn your up here and I'll talk you through my stuf and maybe do a brew if the weather's not too bad.

Even better, Get the wife to drop you off the ladies can go shoping and then we can sample a few. :drunk:

Sounds like a plan to me. I'll organise something in the new year. I'll let you know by PM and we can make final arrangments (address / directions etc).

I told the trouble 'n' strife about shopping, and she just grinned at me.

Thanks orfy.
