is it a good idea to change the blow off water occasionally as it gets pretty brown and i'm wondering if this increases risk of contamination?
No, just detatch it from the carboy before lifting the hose so none runs back in.

In Europe there is 300 year old chicken broth that was placed in a glass container strikingly similar to a carboy with a blowoff.

The broth was boiled in the glass bubble and has been left ever since. Bacteria cannot travel up the tube and into the closed space to contaminate it.
I usually put my tube into sanitzer solution and I don't change it. I would suggest doing the same, you can even use diluted bleach solution...
