At my LHBS, we can mill our grain in the motorized mills they provide - one for most grains and the other for highly roasted grains. If you put chocolate or black patent in the other mill, it pulverizes it to dust.

I know the Barley Crusher is supposedly set correctly out of the box, so here is my question - does anyone open the gap a bit on their BC when they mill darker grains so that they don't completely shatter them?

Other than wheat or rye, you shouldn't have to reset the gaps. One of the LHBS has two mills, but that's because they don't want darker grains contaminating big mill.

I closed the gap on mine and crush everything with the same setting. I haven't noticed the really dark grains getting pulverized
