Catching wild yeast without DME

I wanted to try catching some wild yeast, but have no DME on hand at the moment. Is it possible to catch wild yeast for brewing with cane sugar or something else easily found at the local grocery store?

dme would be best because your catching the yeast that will grow well in beer. table sugar would work but you would probability not get as much growth when you make your first starter. the reason being is the yeast is used to one type of sugar (sucrose) then it has to switch to another type of sugar (maltose)

don't use corn sugar

So then it can be done, but the downside is that the yeast will need to readjust to the malt sugar and not grow as much initially?

Also, only use corn sugar. Got it.

I haven't use sugar catch wild yeast, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

only use kitty roca, it's better than corn sugar (google it)

Stay away from honey. Its naturally anti microbial. Same reason it doesnt ferment in the hives. Also... the poster Said not to use corn sugar.

Good luck. Start small and work your way up to a pitchable count

You could mini-mash as well - crush a few hundred grams of grain, BIAB mash it in a liter or two of water (you could potentially do a short mash as certain BIABers do with their full batches), remove the grains and boil for 15 minutes.

best idea is to just buy it. there are different airborne yeasts in europe than there are here in the u.s.. the 1's in europe tend to be much better for sours. of course this is "assuming" you're in the us..

I think I still have a small bag of grains I was using to test my crush, so maybe I can use that. Otherwise I will try it with table sugar and report back.
