Can I proof yeast with cane sugar?

I want to check the viability of my frozen yeast . Can i just use some cane sugar for this?

You can, but you should use DME/LME if you are going to make a starter.

Ive used corn sugar before to proof, didn't have a problem.

For proofing, no problem. Just don't make it too strong (it will zap your yeast).

That's starter territory there.....you're going to want to back off that

1.020 should be enough. A pinch of yeast nutrient would also be good.
