I'm looking for ways to improve efficiency in my AG setup. Right now I have a 1/2bbl MLT as part of a 3-tier, gravity feed brew stand. I would like to add a pump for mash recirculation. I'm using a 12" bazooka screen when I sparge. For recirculation, do I just use that and plumb it to the inlet of the pump, and put in a return higher up on the MLT? It seems like the screen wouldn't allow enough flow to do this effectively, but I could be wrong. Thoughts?

Works fine, i do this to vorlauf at the end of my mash using my igloo cooler. It sets the grain bed great, sometimes too great that the drain is super slow, but the wort coming out is also crystal clear with no grain matter at all..way better than i could ever get doing it by hand like i used too.

I'd make sure you have a ball valve on the outlet of your pump if you dont though, you may need to throttle the output back depending on pump.

Yeah I'll definitely have a valve on the output of the pump to control flow. Good to know it should work the way I'm hoping it will.

I do this as well. Plan to installing a HERMS coil in my HLT but for now I just recirc last 10 minutes of mash to vorlauf, as well as recirculating each sparge (batch). No issues, like everyone has said though, valve on output of pump and barely open it. I use a stainless chugger pump.
