Has anyone ever used high tensile wire for the top cable for a hopyard trellis. That stuff is strong and has weight/strength capacity numbers that seem to be plenty. What if you doubled it up for more capacity? It's allot cheaper than cable.

Yeah, I used it between the corner posts of a gazebo/shade arbor for several years. The posts were about 15 feet apart, and it supported the weight of a 15 ft section of overgrown hops that were trellised with 20-25 pieces of vertical twine tied to the wire between the posts. Wall o' hops. No problem. There was minimal sag. I'm always a fan of over-engineering, so doubling up and joining the wire by galvanized wire clamps or cable seals, or just some galvanized twisty ties might be a good idea

Might want to rig up a wire tensioner along each row as well for seasonal adjustment...
For a short run it should be OK, but if you are putting up a yard, you have to ask yourself how you feel about trying to rehang Hops when the single strand breaks in a windstorm.
Pretty much have to define whether you are putting in a hop yard, or just growing a few hops in your yard.
You might note that the guys in the link above, used 1/4 inch aircraft cable for their runs, and high tensile wire for their low level support runs, for the irrigation lines, etc.
