Probably should be in the brewing sciences thread but anyway just wondered if anyone had any helpful math to help aspiring brewers.

The one I don't know and have looked in Palmer's and Papazian's books is hoew to convert a recipe using DME into LME.

IMO the best way to convert between the two is to use a calculator (like hopville). If, for example, you wanted to convert a LME extract with steeping grains recipe to DME, just go to hopville and enter all the steeping grains and then add DME until you hit the recipe's target OG. There is some multiplying number around, but I've found that in the time it takes me to dig up that number from wherever I have it saved I can enter it into hopville quicker.

and if u go the other way just divide??

Yup.

For what it's worth, this is how I got that number:

Potential for DME = 1.044 (in other words, 1 pound of DME in 1 gallon of water will give you a gravity of 1.044)
Potential for LME = 1.036

44/36 = 1.22222222222222 (repeating)
