Brewing - day 1 question

Hi,

I have a MrBeer kit. I have 2 small questions:

1- the ingredients were slightly expired, it said best before August of this year. I took a chance anyways. Is it bad?

2- after maybe 14 hours of brewing, there is no foam, rather a pale brownish crust... is if normal?

1. The Mr. Beer kits are not exactly the freshest to begin with. You'll still make beer with it.
2. That's normal.

The yeast with the kits isn't really powerful, so the foam is low. It is normal.
