Doesn't the krausen drop back into the beer?
And the balls sink when it hit the target. Just gotta look for it to no be on top.
The super dark stouts I can see it being a bit tough to see.

(though, I'm personally, use a refractometer to see if fermentation is done)
 
I've considered these too from time to time. Apart from not being able to see through the kreusen, I also have a hard time seeing through my better bottle after the kreusen has left scum all over it. Not with every batch, but with enough that I skipped getting these. I like the refractometer as well.
 
I agree with our muslim overlord. :D

Seems more "gimmicky" than practical. Especially, if you ferment in opaque vessels (e.g., kegs). Probably more fun at brewing parties if people get to see your balls drop. :D
