New to home brewing, doing my research before I start. Got a starter kit for Christmas. Includes a bucket, glass carboy, S airlock among other items. I know some people have attached blow off tubes to 3 piece airlocks, but what about S airlocks?

I measured the top of my S airlock after taking the "cap" off and it was exactly 0.9" in diameter, to the outer edges. I can get tubing with a 1" opening. Will that 0.1" of space be problematic?

Probably. That's almost 1/8" gap. I would either use the airlock as is. Or buy a 3 piece and convert it to a blow-off tube. Or forgo the airlock blow-off assembly all together and just make a blow-off tube attacked to a bung
