I just bottling a Pale Ale. I had 5.25 gallons in the Better Bottle, but only 4 gallons made it to the bottling bucket. Not all of it was due to trub, but there was a lot. I know that some wort was lost bc I dry hopped with whole cascades & some was the yeast cake, but how much (trub/yeast cake) loss do others who BIAB average?

I do double-crush the grains. that probably has an effect on the amount.

Thanks

Hops absorb about 0.0365 gal/oz. Trub loss is usually around 9.1% of the volume into the fwrmenter.

Only reason this would be different for biab is if your grain bag weave is too course and some grain particles got in the fermenter.

I agree, I also experience higher losses to trub and yeast cake. I feel 5.25 gallons to the fermenter is way to low to get 5 gallons finished beer. I like priceless's 10% loss.

IMO a 6.5 better bottle is too small a primary, without perhaps monkeying around w a blow off system.
