Hi, I'm new to home brewing and was going to try this recipe, just wondering if it will work?

1 litre of water
1/4 tsp bakers yeast
1 cup plain white sugar.

- mix all ingredients in a coke bottle with an airlock lid.
- leave to ferment for approx 1 week or until the airlock bubbling slows to
around once per minute.
- syphon into another bottle, leaving the sediment in the bottom behind.
- add 2 tsp sugar and soda stream flavouring.
- fit with lid and allow to ferment further (and carbonate) for about another
week.ensure you check the pressure of the bottle regularly and release some
pressure if its too tight, to ensure it doesnt explode.

- after a week it should be fizzy, alcoholic and ready to drink.

I'd appreciate any constructive feedback, Thanks.

That sounds nasty.

If you are trying to get a buzz on the cheap, why not some cheap ass vodka and some generic soda? That would taste far better than what you'd end up with with that recipe.

It will give you an alcoholic drink, but it won't be beer. Also it would be important for you to note that if you're talking about soda syrup, it's probably mostly corn syrup, which is very fermentable. If you add that to your bottle, it will ferment out, leaving you with a stronger alcoholic drink without the sweetness of soda. Bottom line, it will likely taste disgusting.

sounds like prison hooch to me. Go to one of the big online homebrew sites and order a beginner's kit (or go to your local shop if you have one) if you are interested in brewing. If you just want fizzy alcohol go buy a bottle of cheap vodka.

It will work, however it will be nasty! Sugar Wash (water/sugar/yeast) is just plain nasty!

I wouldn't even call that "brewing", let alone "beer". Where is the malt? or hops? What the hell is going on in New Zealand?

define "work."

If by work you mean maybe get you drunk and definately give you a headache and leave a very nasty taste in your mouth, then yes, it will work.

If you mean, make a pleasant tasting beverage then no.

This thread really reminds me of an old thread from another forum. Check it out. I am chicobrewer in that thread.

That one is way better. This thread seemed like a joke, but to help the OP, please follow some advice and pick up a homebrew book. I think a viable alternative for you is to buy a Mr Beer kit (as outlined in the other forum's responses) to get a feel for what brewing is actually about, at least there is some malt or hops (I hope) in a Mr Beer kit.

Ok, thanks for all the replies.

Sorry if I gave you the impression I was trying to make beer, clearly I am not.

What I was trying was taking an alcoholic ginger beer recipe, taking out the ginger part and replacing it with another flavour.

Thanks to stageseven for explaining to me that soda syrup will not work because the flavour will just ferment out.
